Salt and pepper EVERYTHING is my new philosophy. I love tofu but I know not everyone is convinced. This is a real crowd pleaser though and quick to serve. I like this best with sticky rice but this is nice on its own or stir fried with veggies and noodles.
Notes
Make sure you press the tofu to avoid sogginess!
I get my MSG in a giant bag from Amazon. Its mega cheap and so worth having in.
Ingredients:
Salt & Pepper Tofu
396g firm tofu
1 tbsp salt
1 tbsp caster sugar
1 tsp MSG
1/2 tsp Chinese 5 spice
2 tsp crushed chilli flakes
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground white pepper
2 tbsp cornflour
2 tbsp neutral oil
Directions:
FOR THE CRISPY TOFU
Press the tofu between kitchen roll and tea towels using a heavy weighted object. I use a brick I weirdly have on hand but a big heavy saucepan will do! Press for 20 minutes.
Preheat your oven to 200c standard / 180c fan.
Cut the tofu into bite-sized chunks and set aside.
In a bowl mix together the salt, sugar, MSG, 5 spice, chill flakes, garlic powder, onion powder, ginger powder and the white pepper.
Sprinkle the seasoning over the tofu and use your fingers to coat.
Sprinkle over the cornflour and toss to coat again.
Add in the oil and use your fingers to massage in the seasoning until all the tofu is covered.
Bake on a baking tray for 20-25 minutes, until golden and crispy.
Serve over rice with sliced spring onions.
Enjoy!
